Use of Cyanide in Gold Exploration
Gold forms underground through factors such as heat and pressure from magma. The detection of gold presence in an area generally relies on the knowledge, experience, and studies of geology and geophysics engineers. After identifying potential gold deposit areas, a process called "core sampling" is performed to collect underground samples. The frequency and number of core samples vary depending on the location of the deposit, economic conditions, and other factors. The more core samples taken, the more information is obtained about the deposit. These samples undergo detailed laboratory analysis to determine the underground position of the ore deposit, vein structure, and reserve-grade information. Reserve refers to the exploitable ore mass in tons or cubic meters. Grade is a term used for metal-bearing groups containing gold, indicating the ore concentration per unit volume or weight, such as grams per ton or grams per cubic meter.
The use of cyanide begins at this stage. Cyanide is used in laboratory-scale tests to answer technical questions such as gold grade and the appropriate production method. Based on the information obtained from core samples, all investment details required to extract the ore are economically calculated to determine if the operation will be profitable. If the result indicates an exploitable mineral deposit, mining operations commence.
Cyanide comes into play at this stage. Various methods are used to process the mined gold from its raw state to bullion. Alongside chemical processes like flotation, chemical leaching is commonly applied. Chemical leaching appears in two forms: heap leaching and tank leaching. In heap leaching, raw ore containing gold undergoes crushing and screening to reduce particle size. The crushed ore is then piled into heaps. Cyanide is first applied here because it is the only chemical capable of separating gold from surrounding rock in raw ore. Sodium cyanide (NaCN) solution is used to wash these heaps. Before heap formation, various systems collect gold-loaded NaCN solution from the heap site. This loaded solution is then processed to produce bullion gold.
The other leaching method is tank leaching. In tank leaching, similarly, crushers, mills, screens, and other equipment reduce the particle size of the raw ore. Instead of heap leaching, the crushed ore is subjected to leaching in tanks with NaCN solution. The loaded NaCN solution is then taken from the tanks for further processing to obtain bullion gold.
