Considering the general situation of the sector in Turkey, it is noteworthy that the increasing production over the years has not met consumption, and the demand has been met through imports. In 2023, physical fertilizer production was 4.45 million tons, with 68.8% consisting of Calcium ammonium nitrate (26% N), DAP, Ammonium sulfate, Urea, 20-20-0 and 20-20-0+Zn fertilizers. Fertilizer exports vary according to raw material prices, domestic market conditions, and international fertilizer prices, amounting to approximately 20% of production. In 2023, Turkey's physical fertilizer exports were approximately 717 thousand tons. Fertilizer exports in Turkey are low compared to other countries. The main reasons include dependence on external sources for raw materials, resulting in high production costs, and especially the inability to compete with exporting countries in nitrogenous fertilizers. The chemical fertilizer sector in Turkey is over 90% dependent on imports. In 2023, physical fertilizer consumption was 7.03 million tons, and physical fertilizer imports were 5.2 million tons. A large part of the imports consists of nitrogenous fertilizers classified under GTIP 3102, with total imports in 2023 being significant.
