Ultrasonic homogenizers use the same mechanical principle as industrial mixing systems such as high shear force mixers and crushers, high-speed rotor mixers, multi-shaft mixers, colloid mills, high-pressure homogenizers, and propeller systems. Ultrasonic mixing systems are used to disperse and grind particles, emulsify oil and water phases, dissolve solids, and produce homogeneous mixtures of all kinds of materials in liquids and suspensions. Ultrasonic homogenizers integrate an ultrasonic probe, also known as a sonotrode, into a mixing vessel, such as a batch tank or a flow cell. The ultrasonic probe transmits very high-frequency vibrations to the liquid or suspension and creates intense acoustic cavitation in the liquid. The inward collapse of cavitation bubbles causes powerful shear forces that break and fragment droplets, clumps, aggregates, and even primary particles. Since ultrasonic cavitation generates high-speed cavitational flows up to 1000 km/h, cavitational liquid jets accelerate particles.
