What is an Ultrasonic Homogenizer?
Ultrasonic homogenizer; is a device that breaks and reduces particles in a liquid to obtain a homogeneous and stable liquid.
This device, also known as sonicator, transmits ultrasonic waves via an ultrasonic probe, rapidly vibrating the mixture to create a homogeneous blend. It has become especially important recently in cancer research for preparing liposomes. It also has medical applications such as homogenizing cellular suspensions to isolate viruses. Ultrasonic homogenizers make many processes practical and minimize preparation times. Additionally, the cavitation caused by ultrasonic waves in liquids can be used to clean inaccessible and complex areas. ---vv

HOMOGENIZER GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The number of heads determining transition stages varies according to the density of the raw material to be used. The number of heads between 1 and 10 stages can be connected in series according to the raw material type, calculated by our engineers considering many factors such as the type of work, density, and solid consistency.
How Does an Ultrasonic Homogenizer Work?
Sonication is the fragmentation of cells or chemical compounds by the effect of high-frequency sound waves.
The electrical signal is converted into physical vibration in the material via sonication. Ultrasonic electricity is the main element of the sonication device. The "probe" in Ultrasonic Homogenizers transmits this vibration to the solution. Probes continuously move up and down at vibration speed. The rapid vibration of the probe creates cavitation. Cavitation bubbles repeatedly form and collapse, producing intense vibration waves that break cells.
There are probes of different sizes according to sonication processes.
- Small-sized probes can produce high cavitation and easily disrupt surrounding cells but have a limited effective area due to their size.
- Large-sized probes provide lower reaction intensity but can process higher solution volumes.---In this article, we aimed to provide information on what an Ultrasonic Homogenizer is, its uses, and how it works. Ultrasonic homogenizers are powerful tools for mixing and homogenizing solid-liquid and liquid-liquid suspensions. Ultrasonic homogenization is a mechanical process to reduce particles in a liquid, resulting in small and evenly distributed particles. - GARANTİULTRASONİK COMPANY produces laboratory type and industrial scale ultrasonic homogenization-extraction-emulsifier-ultrasonication nano-dispersion applications. We offer these capabilities.
Applications and Effects of Ultrasonic Homogenizers: Ultrasonic homogenizers are powerful and reliable mixers used in laboratories and industry for many applications. An ultrasonic homogenizer can be used for various applications including homogenization: ultrasonic homogenizers homogenize samples to create uniform and consistent mixtures. Dispersion: ultrasonic homogenizers can disperse solid particles in liquids to create stable suspensions. Ultrasonication is highly efficient in producing nano-dispersions. Emulsification: ultrasonic homogenizers create stable emulsions and nanoemulsions by breaking and dispersing immiscible liquids like oil and water. Cell Disruption: ultrasonic homogenizers can break open cells to extract intracellular components such as proteins, nucleic acids, enzymes, and metabolites. Degassing: ultrasonic homogenizers can remove dissolved gases from liquids, such as HPLC solvents or cooling liquids. Ultrasonic-assisted Chemical Reactions: ultrasonic homogenizers can also be used for sonochemical synthesis, catalysis, or degradation reactions supported by sonication.
In general, ultrasonic homogenizers are versatile tools that can be used for a wide range of applications in research, development, and industrial processes.
Powerful Ultrasound for Particle Size Reduction: When ultrasonic homogenizers are used for mixing, dispersing, and emulsifying applications, the goal is to increase the homogeneity and stability of a liquid or slurry by reducing the size of small particles or droplets. These particles (dispersed phase) can be solid or liquid. A decrease in the average particle diameter increases the number of individual particles. This leads to a decrease in the average particle distance and an increase in particle surface area. The graph shows the correlation between individual particle diameter and total surface area. Surface area and average particle distance can affect the rheology of a liquid. If particle sizes are mostly similar, the tendency for agglomeration during settling or rising decreases because particles of similar size have similar settling or rising rates.-----VVVV
Advantages of Ultrasonic Homogenizers: Compared to traditional homogenization methods, ultrasonic homogenizers have the following qualities: 1-Ultrasonic homogenizers produce small particles/droplets with a narrow distribution curve. 2-Ultrasonic homogenizers can process high solid concentrations. 3-Ultrasonic homogenizers prepare stable suspensions, dispersions, and emulsions. 4-Ultrasonic homogenizers have sensitive and important process parameters (e.g., amplitude, power, time, temperature, and pressure) that can be influenced and adjusted for control. 5-Ultrasonic homogenizers operate very effectively, energy-efficiently, user-friendly, and safely.
Heavy Duty Applications for Ultrasonic Homogenizers: Wet milling, grinding, and mixing are typical applications where ultrasonicators are used as reliable homogenizers. Ultrasonic homogenizers are very efficient for reducing soft and hard particles. Unlike many other homogenization technologies, ultrasonic probe-type homogenizers can process very hard, abrasive, and fibrous materials. The working principle of ultrasonic homogenization is based on cavitation. When liquids are exposed to intense ultrasonication, sound waves propagate through the liquid causing alternating high-pressure and low-pressure cycles (approximately 20,000 cycles/sec). During the low-pressure cycle, small vacuum bubbles with high density form in the liquid as vapor pressure is reached. When bubbles reach a certain size, they violently collapse during the high-pressure cycle. This collapse produces liquid jets at very high pressure and velocity. The resulting flow and turbulence break particle agglomerates and cause intense collisions between individual particles. An important advantage of ultrasonic homogenizers is the very low number of moving parts. This minimizes friction wear and cleaning time. Only two parts contact the liquid: the sonotrode and the flow cell. Both have very simple geometry. Another advantage is full control over cavitation-affecting operational parameters. Hielscher ultrasonic homogenizers can use amplitudes from about 1 to 200 microns. Liquid pressure can vary from 0 to about 500 psig. Since amplitude and pressure are the most effective parameters, their wide operating range allows very gentle or very destructive processing. Hielscher ultrasonic homogenizers are amplitude-controlled. Thus, the set amplitude is maintained under all operating conditions. This makes ultrasonication controllable and reproducible. Under the same operational parameters, sonication will provide consistent and reproducible results. This is important for measuring product quality and scaling processes from laboratory to production levels. The picture shows the ultrasonic disperser UIP1000hdT with a beaker sonication setup (left) and continuous sonication with a flow cell (right).
