Cast iron rollers play a crucial role in seedbed preparation. They conserve moisture by compressing the top layer of soil at approximately the planting depth. They also allow the plant to raise moisture below it, which it cannot use. The seed makes better contact with the soil and germinates more easily. Breaking up clods on the soil surface and leveling the surface before planting allows the planter to operate smoothly without clogging. They are used for pre-winter planting and for compacting loose soil that has swelled after winter. Cast iron rollers, available with a 3-point linkage and trailed type, are manufactured with 20-, 22-, 24-, 26-, 28-, 30-, 32-, and 34-mm intermediate beds. Working width varies between 200 cm and 355 cm.
