Homogenizers – Working Principle, Usage and ScalingHomogenizers 

Homogenizers are a type of mixer that applies mechanical force to mix, emulsify, disperse, and dissolve liquid-liquid and solid-liquid systems. Depending on the homogenizer model, rotational shear, nozzles, or high-power ultrasound are used to generate the forces necessary to break down solid particles as well as liquid droplets. Learn more about homogenizer devices and their applications in research and production!                                                                                                                                   What is a Homogenizer? ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::            A homogenizer is a class of mixing devices designed to break down both solid and liquid particles into a uniform mixture. Homogenizers are available as laboratory, benchtop, and industrial equipment used for various applications in research and industry. Typical applications of homogenizers include mixing and breaking down various materials such as particles, pigments, chemicals, plants, foods, cells, and tissues.---                                                                                                -----High-Power Ultrasound as Homogenizing Force:--------------------------------------------------------------------------The ultrasonic homogenizer uses high-intensity ultrasonic vibrations and cavitation to create very intense shear forces and can therefore be called a super-intense, high-shear mixer. The secret behind the super-intense high shear forces is the acoustic cavitation produced by high-power ultrasonic waves. The ultrasonic homogenizer consists of a generator with a power source and control unit and a converter. The converter contains piezoelectric ceramics. These piezoelectric ceramics convert electrical energy into oscillations because the size and shape of piezoelectric crystals change when voltage is applied. Resonance occurs when the frequency of the electronic oscillator equals the natural frequency of the piezoelectric quartz. Under resonance conditions, the quartz produces longitudinal ultrasonic waves with large amplitude. The generated ultrasonic waves are then transmitted to the process medium via the ultrasonic probe (sonotrode/horn). The amplitude at the ultrasonic probe determines the intensity of ultrasonic waves transmitted to the liquid or slurry. Ultrasonic waves produce alternating high and low-pressure cycles in the liquid medium. During the low-pressure cycle, high-intensity ultrasonic waves generate small vacuum bubbles inside the liquid. During the high-pressure cycle, these small vacuum bubbles collapse destructively. This phenomenon is called cavitation. The bursting of cavitation bubbles can also produce liquid jets with speeds up to 280 m/s, causing strong shear forces. Shear forces break particles, cause particle collisions, mechanically disrupt droplets and cells, and also support highly efficient mass transfer. These cavitation forces produce uniform and homogeneous dispersions, emulsions, and suspensions and are also known to promote chemical reactions (called sonochemistry).-----
---:Ultrasonic Homogenizers and Their Advantages :-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------When it comes to producing solid-liquid (called slurry) and liquid-liquid suspensions and solutions, ultrasonic homogenizers are superior. Since ultrasonic devices use the working principle of ultrasonic cavitation, cavitation occurs only inside the liquid, so the material must be in a wet or liquid phase. This means an ultrasonic device is not very efficient for mixing dry powders, but once the powder is wetted, sonication is the most effective mixing method. Ultrasonic homogenizers are well known for reliably mixing, blending, and dispersing even pastes and high-viscosity materials. The extraordinary intense forces caused by the bursting of cavitation bubbles not only create very strong high shear forces but also generate locally confined high temperatures and pressures as well as related gradients. This combination of physical forces breaks particles into much smaller sizes compared to conventional homogenizers. Therefore, ultrasonic homogenizers are the preferred equipment for reliable production of nano-sized emulsions and dispersions.

Ultrasonic homogenizers are widely used in laboratories and industrial facilities to homogenize solid-liquid and liquid-liquid suspensions, reduce particle size, break down and extract biological material, intensify chemical reactions, and dissolve soluble compounds.

--Emulsification is the process of mixing two or more immiscible liquids together to prepare a stable or semi-stable mixture. Generally, these two liquids consist of an oil phase and an aqueous (water) phase. An emulsifier (surfactant / co-surfactant) is added to stabilize the mixture of different liquid phases. The droplet size of an emulsion plays a very important role when it comes to the functionality and stability of an emulsion. Ultrasonics is a very popular method for producing micron and nano emulsions because sonomechanical forces created by ultrasound break droplets and reduce them to small droplets. Ultrasonic homogenizers are a reliable tool for producing O/W and W/O emulsions, reverse emulsions, double emulsions (O/W/O, W/O/W), mini emulsions, and Pickering emulsions. Based on this flexibility and reliable emulsification capacity, ultrasonic homogenizers (sometimes called ultrasonic emulsifiers when used for emulsification) are used to produce long-term stable emulsions in industries such as chemical, food, pharmaceutical, and fuel. :::::::Ultrasonic Dispersion :  GARANTİULTRASONİK   brand   Ultrasonic homogenizers are very effective when reliable reduction of particle agglomerates, aggregates, and even primary particle sizes is required. The advantage of ultrasonic homogenizers is their ability to grind particles to smaller and more uniform particle sizes, whether micron or nano particles are targeted as a process result. Cavitational shear forces and liquid flows accelerate particles to collide with each other. This is known as inter-particle collision. The particles themselves act as a grinding medium preventing contamination caused by grinding media required when using conventional bead mills and subsequent separation processes. Because particles collide at very high speeds up to 280 m/s, extremely high forces are applied to the particles, and therefore particles break into very small pieces. Friction and erosion give these particle fragments a bright surface and smooth shape. The combination of shear forces and inter-particle collision provides ultrasonic homogenization and particle dispersion with highly homogeneous colloidal suspensions and nano dispersions.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::ADVANTAGES OF ULTRASONICS IN NANOMATERIALS PRODUCTION:-------------------------------------Producing nanomaterials with ULTRASONIC Dispersion and ULTRASONIC Homogenization is very easy.                  -Preparing nano-sized mixtures for both emulsions and dispersions is a challenging task. Most traditional homogenizing and blending techniques such as blade mixers, bead mills, high-pressure homogenizers, and other mixers have the capacity to produce micron-sized particles but cannot reliably reduce droplets and solids to nano size. This is mainly due to insufficient intensity. For example, blade mixers do not provide enough shear force to break particles down to nano size. Another type of homogenizer, bead mills, cannot grind solids finer than the beads (grinding media) themselves. The average size of conventional grinding beads ranges from 1.5 mm to 35 mm. Another problem is contamination caused by wear and tear of the grinding media.
