SARS-CoV-2, also known as 2019-nCoV or the novel coronavirus 2019, is responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic that began in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and spread worldwide. SARS-CoV-2, with a high infection/transmission rate, primarily spreads through droplet infection and fomite transmission. However, since virus particles can also be found in feces, fecal-oral transmission is also possible.

The main route of human-to-human transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is close contact with infected individuals: respiratory droplets generated by sneezing and coughing of an infected person are inhaled by others, leading to infection.
