SARS-CoV-2, also known as 2019-nCoV or the novel coronavirus 2019, is responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic that began in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and spread worldwide. SARS-CoV-2, with a high infection/transmission rate, primarily spreads through droplet infection and fomite transmission. However, since virus particles can also be found in feces, fecal-oral transmission is also possible.
The main route of human-to-human transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is close contact with infected individuals: respiratory droplets generated by sneezing and coughing of an infected person are inhaled by others, leading to infection. Coronaviruses like SARS-CoV-2 primarily bind to the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor found mainly in the lungs (and to a lesser extent in the heart, intestines, arteries, and kidneys). Coronavirus spike proteins (S-proteins/glycoproteins) bind to the ACE2 receptor, fuse with the host cell membrane, and enter the host cell. Like all viruses, coronaviruses use the host cell to replicate their genomes and produce new virus particles.
Coronaviruses contain a positive-sense, single-stranded RNA genome. Unlike influenza viruses, coronaviruses are non-segmented viruses. SARS-CoV-2 has a relatively short genome consisting of a single long genetic molecule sequence, meaning SARS-CoV-2 viruses consist of only a single segment.

The scientific name of coronaviruses is Orthocoronavirinae or Coronavirinae, belonging to the Coronaviridae family. Coronaviruses are a group of related viruses causing diseases in mammals and birds.
