how to make charcoal

Among the various types of solid fuels, charcoal, which consists of 80-90% pure carbon, is of particular interest. This makes it primarily an efficient biofuel, virtually smokeless and environmentally friendly. Its scope is wide enough both for various industries and for home use. In this article we will look at how you can burn coal with your own hands and how this happens in industrial production.

Production technology

Buy charcoal, high purity It is consumed in large quantities by metallurgical enterprises, where it is used in the production of alloys and for the saturation of the metal with carbon, as well as to increase its physical properties.

In the chemical industry, this product is used in the manufacture of glass, various plastics and even paint. Coal has not been protected by the food industry either; In food products, it acts as a natural dye, usually shown on their packaging under the code E153.

Such a significant demand requires production in relevant volumes, therefore, charcoal stoves are often located near or on the territory of woodworking enterprises. This is understandable, because there are large quantities of wood waste of various species, which serve as raw materials for burning coal.

In simple terms, charcoal production technology is designed to solve the problem of obtaining carbon of the highest possible purity from wood. For this, all other organic and inorganic substances obtained using the pyrolysis reaction must be removed. Its essence lies in the isolation of all unnecessary compounds from the raw material by thermal decomposition with insufficient oxygen. But let's go in order.

The production process has four stages (not counting the preliminary preparation of raw materials):

  • Drying at temperatures up to 150 ºС. The pyrolysis process, which takes place at higher temperatures, requires a minimum amount of moisture in the raw material;
  • Pyrolysis and lack of oxygen at a temperature of 150-350 ºС. Thermal decomposition of substances occurs and coal begins to form. Pyrolysis gases are released;
  • Combustion (calcination) when heated to 500-550 ºС. At this stage, residues of tar and gaseous substances are released from the coal;
  • recovery (cooling).
