Operation of our membrane systems is based on semi-permeable fibers made by INMATEC. These fibers are located in cylindrical cartridges. Gas flow is supplied under pressure into one of these membrane cartridges (and into a bundle of membrane fibers within). While the oxygen is diffused to the outside, the nitrogen molecules remain in the hollow fiber. Due to the difference in partial pressures on the internal and external membrane surface, gas flow separation is achieved. So the system takes advantage of distinctive physical characteristics of various gases in the air. Nitrogen's penetration speed to the membrane surfaces are low while the speeds of the oxygen and water vapor are relatively higher. The air gets compressed and prepared before it goes to the membrane cartridges. It first goes through the air compressor, then the air treatment units that consist of an air dryer and a set of filters. Air needs to be compressed in order to be used in a generator and filtering it is vital in order to prevent any damage occurring to the generator or the end product. Purity of the produced nitrogen may vary between 95% and 99.5%. Increased amount of membrane modules and treated air are needed for producing nitrogen at higher purity. Investment and management costs get increased as a result of this. That's why determining the right gas specifications is needed to produce nitrogen at the right amount of purity in the most cost-effective way possible. |
Membrane generators are more compact and light-weight compared to PSA generators so they consume much lesser space. But unless you absolutely need this feature, you may want to choose PSA generators instead.
PSA generators can produce nitrogen at higher purity rate, have less maintenance costs and are more stable in every aspect than membrane generators, so they should be used instead of membrane generators when it's affordable to do so by means of the cost you'll pay and the requirements you have.
