The main purpose of disinfecting drinking water is to kill pathogenic microorganisms that cause waterborne diseases. In the food industry, the purpose of water disinfection is not only to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms but also to prevent water from being a source of contamination for foods and to reduce the microbial load. Disinfection ensures that microorganisms do not deteriorate the quality of the water itself and prevents undesirable changes in the taste and odor of the produced food.

Safe water is water that does not contain harmful bacteria, toxic materials, or chemicals. Commercially sold spring waters, drinking waters, and natural mineral waters licensed by the Ministry of Health are monitored during production and are considered safe. Municipal network waters are also regularly inspected by municipalities and the Ministry of Health. These waters are disinfected using appropriate methods with chlorine and chlorine compounds to eliminate microorganisms that cause waterborne diseases.

Disinfection can be carried out using various methods, such as chemical disinfectants, chlorine, UV, or ozone. The most preferred method is chlorination. The reasons for choosing chlorination include:

The liquid chlorine disinfection system consists of a MixRite dosing pump, a polyethylene chlorine tank, and a diluted liquid chlorine (Sodium Hypochlorite) solution. When selecting a chlorine dosing pump, the water flow rate (hourly capacity) and the pressure values on the pipeline where chlorination will be applied are taken into consideration. Chlorine dosing should be performed on the pipeline leading to the reservoir or directly into the tank. Depending on the contamination load, the water should remain in the tank for the desired contact time with chlorine.
