Unlike many other homogenization technologies, ultrasonic probe-type homogenizers can process very hard, abrasive, and fibrous materials. The working principle of ultrasonic homogenization is based on cavitation. When liquids are exposed to intense ultrasonication, sound waves propagate through the liquid causing alternating high and low-pressure cycles (approximately 20,000 cycles/sec). During the low-pressure cycle, small vacuum bubbles with high density form in the liquid as vapor pressure is reached. When bubbles reach a certain size, they violently collapse during the high-pressure cycle. This collapse generates high-pressure, high-velocity liquid jets. The resulting flow and turbulence break particle agglomerates and cause intense collisions between individual particles. An important advantage of ultrasonic homogenizers is the very few moving parts, minimizing friction wear and cleaning time. Only two parts contact the liquid: the sonotrode and flow cell, both having very simple geometry. Another advantage is full control over cavitation-affecting operational parameters. Hielscher ultrasonic homogenizers can use amplitudes from about 1 to 200 microns. Liquid pressure can vary from 0 to about 500 psig. Since amplitude and pressure are the most effective parameters, their wide operating range allows very gentle to very destructive processing. Hielscher ultrasonic homogenizers are amplitude-controlled, maintaining set amplitude under all operating conditions. This makes ultrasonication controllable and reproducible. The same operational parameters yield consistent and reproducible sonication results. This is important for quality of produced material and scaling process results from laboratory to production level.
